I absolutely love the RR series and Brown's writing is top notch for YA themes. However this supplemental content was really disappointing to me. While reading the RR trilogy I had envisioned some really impressive tech and futuristic gadgetry that seemed seamlessly integrated into the daily lives of the characters. To me that is a sign of great SciFi writing, where the focus is on the story and not the tech. However, for a story that is supposed to take place so far in the future, all of the tech and gadgetry, even the surroundings of this story look present day. I think the Razor's were the biggest disappointment as it literally looked like a leather whip on a stick, with no controls. The character art was also extremely minimalist; too much so IMHO.I also envisioned a much greater visual disparity between races. For instance golds being extremely tall and muscular with bronzy/golden skin as described in the RR books, and pinks extremely thin and almost pale/pinkish. In this work they just look like average Joes.Golds with blonde hair and clothes from the 1950's, and Reds just short folks with red hair. Fitchner was specifically described in the books as being a bit overweight and kind of oafish - inferior in appearance to other golds. Here he looked like someones dad and other than a plain face and a few inches shorter was exactly the same. This was missed opportunity for richness I feel.I realize the joy should be in the story (I'm also a writer), but the lack of attention to detail was actually distracting for me. The story itself also felt rushed, as if there it was just Lilly-padding to plot points as fast as possible. A lot of the connecting sub-plots were thin at best as well. I don't regret purchasing it as I really love the RR universe, but this really fell short for me. I hope any future media puts a lot more time and care into developing the IP better.Keep writing Pierce, you are a master of your craft - but maybe consider other studios to represent your genius in the future. I have preordered only a handful of things in my entire life. But I love the Red Rising series so much I preorderd this graphic novel and was extremely excited when it arrived. Unfortunately it proved a great disappointment. The story does not provide much new information about Fitchner, really just a few extra details that don't add to the character or universe. But as disappointing as the story was 'art' is truly insulting. It looks like the first pass sketches of a graphic novel. And I do mean sketched. I would not call anything in this graphic novel art. It feels like someone realized on Friday night this was due Monday morning and busted it out over the weekend. It is difficult to even tell which characters are which they are all so generic and poorly sketched.I love the books and recommend all of them but this graphic novel should be skipped. It adds nothing to the universe or characters and is so poorly sketched it is difficult to even follow.
